EAD 801: Leadership and Organizational Development
Nancy Colflesh
What qualities make a great leader? Can anyone acquire the skills to become a strong leader? This class was my initial introduction into leadership at an academic level. The focus of the class was on analyzing and understanding the components of leadership and development within an organization. We read and discussed various books and articles, both in small and large group settings. EAD 801 really set a strong foundation for what it would take for me to become a great leader and communicator, as I progressed through the Masters Of Arts In Education Degree (MAED) program.
TE 838: Children's Literature in Film
Laura Apol
TE 838 was about applying media and film studies to films derived from children's literature. I learned a great deal about how to analyze and interpret books in a variety of media. The class taught me strategies I could use to create a deeper understanding of the quality and strength of a novel or book. We reviewed such text and films as Charlotte's Web and The Wizard of Oz. TE 838 sharpened my ability to effectively teach and reflect on films that originated from children's books with my students, creating a deeper, more enriching experience.

EAD 824: Leading Teacher Learning
Nancy Colflesh
An extension of EAD 801, EAD 824 helped me to dig deeper into the best practices for leadership. We discussed how strong schools create a positve learning environment, where students, teachers, and administrators all collaborate for a common goal. We discussed the importance of having a growth mindset, as well as establishing various types of leadership groups. From discussions with peers and the professor, I started to understand that leadership is not solely for those at the top levels of a company or school; rather, it starts from the ground floor up. I was able to take this information back to my own school setting, creating a better learning environment for both students and faculty.
ED 800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Steven Weiland
This course helped to give me the basic fundamentals of school leadership. The course outlined potential issues faced by educational administration, and gave me an understanding of the looking at how student and faculty perspectives and expectations guide the direction of the learning environment. IA key idea that I gleamed from this class was a strengthened understanding of what inquiry is, both for teachers and students. Vivian Paley's The Girl with the Brown Crayon was especially insightful. ED 800 also was the first class where I learned how to use technology and resources to assist me in strengthening my own teaching and leadership pedagogy.

EAD 850: Multicultural Education
Riyad Shajahan
EAD 850 examined how historical and political issues shaped current educational practices K-16. The class looked at multicutural education, then and now. We discussed what authentic teaching of different norms and beliefs looked like, and the importance of showcasing these differences in a positive and faithful light. The class really stretched me to examine my own ideologies and classroom practices; in turn, this allowed me to constantly be vigilant of incorporating as many viewpoints and ideas as I could. Simply introducing anything foreign to my students as "authentic" would simply not suffice to their understanding of the world. As a final examine, my group and I were tasked with examining another country's educational policy. I gained a greater awareness of issues faced by teachers across the globe as a result of this course.
TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Patricia Edwards
This class satisfied the state reading requirement for all teachers; however, it served a greater purpose for me. The emphasis of this class helped me to find new and effective strategies to reach my students. I learned how to use diagnostic assessments and other tools to determine what deficiencies my students had in reading. From the information gained from TE 846, I was able to teach the skills necessary for academic success. Throughout the duration of the class, I was monitoring and assisting a student for a case study. The lessons I learned from this class gave me the information and skill-set needed for the job I am starting this fall as the K-8 Academic Reading Specialist.

CEP 883: Psychology of Classroom Discipline
My Lien
The focal point of this course was to enrich my knowledge and ability to understanding student behavior. Through reading and research, I have started to see the role psychology has on student behavior and academics. From classroom seating arrangement, to finding preventative approaches to discipline, CEP 883 has given me numerous tools and resources needed to help create a warm, nurturing classroom; one in which students feel safe to offer opinions and accept feedback. This class has had an immense impact on how I will deal with varying issues my students may possess over the next few years. Thanks to all of the material and reading, I know now preventative measures I can take to have the type of classroom I previously thought was unobtainable!
ED 870: Capstone Seminar
Matt Koehler
This class is the culmination of my experiences within the MAED program. It has tasked me to reflect on how I have come to this point in time as an educator, and where I plan to go from here. It has given me a stronger grasp on using technology to assist me in showcasing my dedication and strength as an educator. ED 870 has to show me how everything I have learned - at Michigan State University and beyond - has effected and enriched my understanding of what a makes a strong teacher.
